The Woman Who Stopped Traffic

Written by admin

If like me you have been glued to the channel 4 programme The Woman Who Stopped Traffic you will be pleased to know that you can now join the campaign and put yourself on the U.K car free map. The map allows you to pledge a weekly car free journey and will work out your carbon saving.

For those of you who have not seen the inspirational Kris Murrin in action the last in the series can be viewed on Tuesday evening at 9pm. In the final episode Kris will be in Durham encouraging residents to go car free for a day. Im hoping she has more success here than in Boston and that the simple sensible idea of everyone going car free for one day every week will catch on and that this wont be the last we hear of this campaign.

On Yer Bike.

Written by admin

Bike week starts today and as I may have mentioned a few times before I love cycling in fact it is one of my most favourite things in the world. So imagine my delight when I heard about a photography competition aimed at celebrating the diversity of womens cycling.
In order to promote cycling to ladies in the London borough of Lambeth and to show that cycling can be cool and chic Lambeth council have decided to organise the bicycle belles competition. There are hundreds of women cycling through and around Lambeth every day and the numbers are increasing. As it is no longer the domain of the lycra clad middle class male they are looking for images that portray the diversity of women and their bikes. So please send them your photographs of women cycling in and around the borough. More info on how to submit your entries here.
For those of you not living or working in Lambeth like myself there is no need to feel left out. I have discovered a fab website called cyclechic where you can upload photos of yourself cycling and looking glam on their facebook group. So what are you waiting for the weather is great get on yer bike and dont forget to take your camera.

Lovely La Rosa Hotel

Written by admin

Jez and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary last weekend staying at the beautiful La Rosa Hotel in the east coast seaside town of Whitby.

Id heard about the eco-friendly La Rosa Campsite in Yorkshire from one of our web design clients ecoescape but later came to learn that the folks who created the kitsch camping experience are now running a hotel by the sea.
La Rosas ethos is low impact and make-do-and-mend furnishing the caravans in their campsite and the rooms in their hotel with antique and second hand furniture. Down to the tiniest detail they have carefully chosen pre-loved trinkets and decorations to create a wondrous world in which to escape.
In keeping with La Rosas green and gentle vibe low odour paints and vintage wallpapers have been used throughout the building and lovingly restored items are brought back to life.

The tea room downstairs houses a display cabinet filled with mementos books figurines puppets dolls and photos inspired by the Whitby Museum. Above the cabinet hangs a huge flag declaring

Search for holidays with a heart

Written by admin

I have an urgent mission for all Green Girls: to find the greenest or most life-changing holiday you can.
With the economic climate not looking too sunny its easy to spend hours online browsing idyllic holidays that will let you get away from it all.
But dont think for a moment that lack of funds makes this daydreaming a waste of your (or your employers!) time. Oh no. With the deadline for nominations for the 2009 Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards looming now is the chance to put all that in-depth research into action
The Awards are organized by online travel agent responsibletravel.com and theyd love your tip-offs of tour operators hoteliers and destinations around the world that are doing their bit to help people and the planet.
Dont worry they dont expect you to be responsible travel experts just give them the name and a couple of lines to say why you think the hotel / lodge / tour operator / destination is eco-friendly and/or giving something back to the local community and the Responsible Tourism Awards judging panel will dig deeper (read more about the judging process).
Win a holiday of a lifetime
You can make as many nominations as you want and if it turns out youve nominated a winner (winners are announced in November) you could be in with a chance to win a holiday of a lifetime for you and a friend.
2008 Award winners Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps are offering a memorable prize safari holiday in Kenya.
The prize includes 7 nights accommodation (1 night Tribe Hotel 2 nights Amboseli Porini Camp 2 nights Ol Pejeta Rhino Camp 2 Nights Mara Porini Camp) and return economy flights from Heathrow to Nairobi.

Award-winning holidays
To give you an idea of the kind of holiday that wins an Award and why lets have a look at some of last years winners

A Girls Eye View of the Road Ahead

Written by admin

We have a truck. It is a shiny black Ford F150 with an extended cab for our dog. It is old now made in 1996 and has lasted well carting our loads (artwork and woodwork) and through numerous road trips east and west. Our truck has two tanks for gas. If one tank runs out we flip the switch and move to the second. On long trips we can usually drive for half a day without stopping. I could get to my mothers house in 24 hours. We are now wondering what we will be driving next and doing so with a new set of values.
Ford asked me to test drive the 2010 Fusion Hybrid and here are my thoughts.
Again I love Ford. I like the feeling of being in a car made here. The fact that the new hybrids pollute less tugs at my heartstrings. These are progressive treats that make things feel hopeful for our world. The hybrid starts on a battery and hums when turned on. I liked the safety features (backup projection with alarm side view mirror signals to assist with the blind spot.) There is a flower icon on the dash that grows greener as your fuel efficiency improves (we took a 3 hour trip and averaged 37 mph.) The interior is

Thought and (action) for the day

Written by admin

For those of you who buy your milk in plastic cartons for convenience or in the belief that organic milk only comes in that form think again ! I moved house about 6 weeks ago and was determined to start having milk delivered. I rang the dairy and made my order and just as I was about to put the phone down asked if they did organic milk. To my suprise they did and sure enough the next day I had organic milk in a resusable bottle delivered by an electrical vehicle by a local company. How green is that ?
So for those of you who wish to banish those plastic cartons from your life and have 5 minutes to spare get the yellow pages out now. You will be supporting a local company local farmers and reducing waste at the same time. Not to mention the social benefits of having the milkman/lady in your community-but thats another story.

The Volt

Written by admin

My dictionary defines the word volt as a unit of electromotive force. I think that about sums up the new electric car called the Volt that is currently in development now.
It is not lost on me that the car maker that is accused of killing the electric car is at the forefront of bringing it back !
The Chevrolet Volt is a battery powered electric vehicle that uses a gas engine to create additional electricity to extend its range. It uses what General Motors is calling the E-Flex system. E for electricity and Flex for the many ways you can generate it. The electricity to operate the Volt can come from a number of sources: natural gas biofuels hydroelectric wind solar and of course regular gas.

Hybrid School Bus

Written by admin

This Hybrid School Bus story isnt a new one but I just found out about it and thought I would share anyway.
Over in the US they have taken a huge step forward with school transport. The programme led by the non-profit organisation Advanced Energy is planned to revolutionise the school bus market. Starting with 19 hybrid buses in several states this year and the most recent going to Texas the programme will eventually be rolled out country-wide.
The buses are primarily run on diesel and also have an electric motor. The plug in technology that they use means the batteries can be re-charged overnight and therefore more energy taken from them whilst the bus is being driven. Electricity is relatively inexpensive so as well as creating less pollution they can in the long term save money for schools too. If the buses were charged on renewable energy then they would be even greener!
For a more detailed explanation of how it all works visit the technical pages of the Hybrid School Bus website.
Learning about these school buses got me thinking about public transport in general. Here in Nottingham a car park which was demolished in January 2006 and re-built recently opened in the middle of the city. The lovely people of Nottingham had lived without the car park for nearly two years and nothing disastrous happened so I cant help but ask why bother re-building it at all? The Nottingham City Council website boasts that the new Trinity Car Park has 120 more spaces than the old one a special shopper tariff and

Which Carbon Offset? Some answers

Written by admin

Back in December I wrote a post about my experiences in searching for a suitable carbon offset Which Carbon Offset?
In response Matt Feldman who runs the Carbon Neutral Digest blog kindly offered to provide us with some clarification on the types of carbon offsetting packages that are available and the benefits and downfalls of some of them.
Much of Matts work on the Carbon Neutral Digest involves reviewing offset providers and so I jumped at the chance of having someone with more experience on the subject share their knowledge with us.
Matts article Choosing a Carbon Offset Provider can be read over at Green Guys Global. Enjoy!

Lighting The Governments Response

Written by admin

Its been a little while since I complained about lighting outside buildings (and inside for that matter) so I thought it was about time I had another moan.
The government has given their response to a petition on floodlighting I signed a while ago. The petition requested a ban on uneccessary floodlighting and asked the government to lead by example and reduce the lighting on their own buildings.
You can read the whole response at the 10 Downing Street e-petition site but the straight answer is that they do not intend to bring in a policy which bans floodlighting.
They say that

Review & Special Offer! Start up with greentomatokit

Written by admin

I like greentomatos pragmatic ethos they believe that everyone can be kinder to the planet but know we arent going to start giving up our comforts any time soon. Thats why theyre here to help us figure out all the green conundrums of everyday life.
One of the latest innovations from these guys is the greentomatokit which they very kindly sent me to try out. The first thing that struck me as our postman handed me the parcel was that the packaging itself is biodegradable It even explains saying that excess packaging is bad for the planet and thats why they chose this potato starch covering. Nice one guys! Ive ordered stuff from various suppliers of environmentally friendly products and too often been disappointed by the excessive use of bubble wrap and polystyrene (yuk!).
This starter kit is for those wanting to go green at home but dont know where to start and straight away Im thinking what a great house-warming (hmmm or house-cooling?) gift this would make. It contains all the essentials covering the major areas to make change in your home:
Heating = Radiator panels & room temperature thermometer
Electricity = Energy saving light bulbs & turn it off stickers
Water = A Save a Flush
Waste = No junk mail dont forget your bag & recycling stickers
Plus it all comes in a giant cotton bag (much bigger than the regular tote style ones) to re-use for shopping and cut out the nasty plastic variety I have a bag addiction so naturally I love this.
I have to say though that aside from all these goodies my favourite part of the kit is the sheet that explains why each item will help green up your home and how much carbon or water you can save when you use them. For me this is the most important item because this kit isnt for an already enthusiastic greeny its for those who need a nudge in the green direction. We cant expect people to make any kind of a change to such a personal part of their lives (their home) without explaining why it benefits them as well as the planet.
OK so how do you get one of these kits? Well you can go straight over to the greentomato website and hit buy or you can sign up to the GGG Newsletter and get a special discount coming up for newsletter subscribers only! The first GGG newsletter comes out Friday 8th February so make sure youre signed up before then where youll receive full details of the offer.
In the meantime mosey on over to the greentomato website anyway and check out what theyre doing.
To learn more about the thinking behind the greentomatokit and the measurable benefits it can help you make in the greentomatos January 2008 press release.

Carbon Dioxide Made Back into Gas

Written by admin

I found this story online at the New York Times so fascinating that I had to share it.
Two scientists are proposing a concept for removing carbon dioxide from the air and turning it back into gasoline. They call their idea Green Freedom. The air would be blown over a liquid solution of potassium carbonate the CO2 would be extracted and subjected to a chemical reaction that would turn it into fuel. Sounds simple enough. And is it actually doable? Yes! So why hasnt anyone done it yet? Because apparently it takes a ton of energy to produce preferably a huge nuclear power plant!
The article goes on to evaluate and compare all alternative fuels we are looking into nowadays hydrogen biofuels and electric cars. They all have their pros and cons; but heres a paragraph I found really interesting:
Gasoline it turns out is an almost ideal fuel (except that it produces 19.4 pounds of carbon dioxide per gallon). It is easily transported and it generates more energy per volume than most alternatives. If it can be made out of carbon dioxide in the air the Los Alamos concept may mean there is little reason to switch after all. The concept can also be adapted for jet fuel; for jetliners neither hydrogen nor batteries seem plausible alternatives.
Gas is the most perfect fuel!?! If this idea can actually come true we could have the perfect close-loop cycle: gas to CO2 back to gas.
Heres the link to the full article written by Kenneth Chang on 2.19.08 at the New York Times.

Energy: What is the solution?

Written by admin

The law of conservation of energy states that energy can not be created or destroyed it can only be changed from one form to another. So how can we conserve enough energy for our growing demands without damaging the environment?
There are so many arguments amongst environmentalists Government scientists and energy companies about what energy source will be the answer to all of our problems that its really hard for Jo Public to know what the best solution is.
I am going to attempt to take the knowledge that I have learnt during the first year of my BSc in Environmental Studies and write a series of posts exploring a variety of energy solutions.
In each post I will explore the process of converting energy from one form to another the disadvantages and advantages of each one.
The categories will include:
Fossil fuels
Nuclear
Wind
Solar
Hydro and Tidal Wave
Geothermal
Biofuels and Biomass
Kinetic energy
I will aim to write at least one post a week though my apologies now if I get a bit behind.
It would be good to use the posts to have discussions with you all with respect to what you think about the energy solutions and how realistic it is for our energy needs to be met via that source.

Green Jobs Fight Global Warming

California Senator Barbara Boxer has just posted her statement at a hearing she convened. She is Chairman of the Senates Committee on Environment and Public Works. Here it is. Its not too long to read.
I just recently did an article on Green Collar Jobs and how this is great way to fight global warming and poverty as well. Many politicians are also starting to promote this idea and it is spreading rapidly across the US.
Whats going on on the other side of the pond? I tend to find Europe always ahead of the game on green issues or is this one issue the US has finally taken the lead?

Can we have the bill please?

Written by admin

Thank you to all the GGG readers who signed the Wildlife Trusts petition fish which I reported about in the Cycling to save our seas post.
On Wednesday 10th October I joined my colleagues from the other 47 Wildlife Trusts in the UK to attend an event at the House of Commons where we took with us a shoal of over 200 petition fish containing over 150000 signatures showing support for the implementation of a Marine Bill.

At the event we met with MPs to gain their support for the Marine Bill and also to launch the Wildlife Trusts new report Marine Reserves TLC for our seas and sea life which explains the urgent action needed to allow UK seas to recover from centuries of over-intensive exploitation for everything from food to building materials and oil.

The UKs seas are extraordinarily rich in wildlife home to more than 44000 animal and plant species around 50% of the UKs biodiversity. However shockingly less than 0.001% of our seas are protected. The Wildlife Trust and other members of the Wildlife & Countryside Link are calling for the Marine Bill to be mentioned in the Queens Speech next month. It is extremely important that we lobby the government to ensure that the Marine Bill comes to Parliament during the 2007-8 session. As mentioned in a previous post if the government do not deliver the Marine Act in the time frame needed then we could lose a variety of marine species and our seas will begin to die. We really do need to provide TLC for our seas and marine life now!

On Wednesday 17th October the Wildlife Trust and other members of the Wildlife & Countryside Link including the Marine Conservation Society will be taking their collected signatures to 10 Downing Street to demonstrate the level of public support for the Marine Bill. To show your support and demand the Bill then write to your MP and email Gordon Brown. Also if you are a scuba diver then why not join the Marine Conservation Society on their Divers March at Westminster on Wednesday 7th November for further details contact them.
I will keep you updated about the Marine Bill campaign.

Strengthen the Climate Change Bill

Written by admin

The WWF are calling for support in urging the government to strengthen the UK climate change bill.
Strangely the bill doesnt include emissions from aviation and shipping and the government arent planning to include them. Does that make any sense considering they are two of the fastest growing sources of emissions?
WWF will be taking a giant paper boat and paper plane to parliament covered in the names of everyone who supports their request for a change to the bill. Visit http://getonboard.wwf.org.uk to find out more and sign their petition.

Bills Bills Bills..

Written by admin

My interest in politics is becoming stronger everyday this is because as I get older (26 next) and hopefully wiser I realise that politics affects every aspect of my life as it does yours. Thus today when the Queens speech was delivered I was very interested to find out which Bills had been included.
By the way in case you did not know the Queens speech is only hers in name as it is the governments script to communicate their long term changes that they think the UK needs. I think that instead of using the outdated fashion of using the Queen the PM should deliver it himself as it is his words.
Anyhow although the government gave us a sneak preview of the proposed Bills earlier on in the year the speech today provided confirmation of what was on their agenda.
In total there were 29 Bills covered including the following four all of which have an affect on the environment:
Climate Change Bill
Through the introduction of this Bill the UK will be set to become the first nation to introduce legislation to cut its contribution to climate change. The Bill should create a legal framework to reduce the UKs carbon dioxide emissions by 60% by 2050.
I think that the introduction of the Bill is fantastic; however it needs to be strengthened in order to be truly effective. Environmental organisations such as Friends of the Earth want to see it increased to 80% by 2050 I agree.
However in terms of the government even delivering their target of 60% I am very interested to see how they propose that the UK achieves this. I think that environmental lobby groups will play an extremely important role in supporting and ensuring that the targets are met as will individuals we can not expect the government to do everything. And yes I personally will take action by taking my lifestyle to an even greener level (will keep you update on GGG).
Marine (Draft) Bill
Hurrah! They mentioned the Marine Bill which I was actively involved in lobbying for as reported in my Can we have the Bill please post .
However.it was only a draft bill which is extremely disappointing as this may mean that it will only amount to another consultation which is what happened back in 2005. The UK Government the EU and the rest of the World need to pay attention because our seas are dying and we have to prevent further species from declining and our seas from becoming polluted.

Further lobbying and strong action needs to be taken to get the Marine Bill took serious. I will keep you updated about my own personal lobbying on this.
Planning Bill
The Bill was introduced in response to issues of unaffordable housing and an increase in population. Thus the PM has pledged to build 3million homes by 2020.
3 million? Where? Urban areas are already extremely cramped in the UK and it is not good for society to live too cramped together for social and psychological reasons. In urban areas green spaces are required for environmental and also health reasons thus cramping in more houses is not a real solution.
Where will they put these new houses then? Brown belt Green Belt who knows perhaps even SSSIs (sites of special scientific interest) may not be safe.
I must admit that the planning bill does also bring in ethical issues as well as environmental because from my understanding we need more houses due to our increasing population of migrants / immigrants. Now I am a descendent of an immigrant (my father came to the UK aged 4 became a UK citizen when he was 18) and I am engaged to an immigrant (who was a refugee and is now a UK citizen). I would have hated to have thought that my father or my fiancé would not have been welcome into the UK due to issues with increased population (there were no problems back then).
However today in the UK I think that there is an ethical versus an environmental issue in terms of population. If the population level keeps increasing then obviously we need to build more houses roads facilities etc potentially even at the risk of losing important green belt land and having an affect on wildlife thus being an environmental issue. On the other hand some of the people coming to the UK could be environmental or political refugees thus raising an ethical issue of if we dont welcome them and house them then what will happen to them? Who will look after them?
I wish that I had the answers to this one however I am struggling. What do you think?
Energy Bill
Through this Bill the government aims to provide greater incentives for renewable energy generation. Which is great if this means that they want to look into solar etc. However the Bill will also include investing into nuclear power which is absolutely disastrous.
Local Transport Bill
This Bill would give local authorities more freedom in terms of local transport policies including the controversial road-pricing schemes. Although I am a non driver (I use pubic transport or cycle instead and I NEVER want to drive) I am sceptical about road pricing we should reduce the amount of cars on the road for many reasons including environmental but would charging people work. Would some find a way round it? Would the poor suffer? Would those who can not walk / cycle and rely on someone like a carer to take them out suffer. I think I will look more into this Bill and see what they are proposing and implications.
Conclusion.
Thank you if you read all the way to the end as it was a long post (sorry). Anyhow in conclusion it is great that the government included these Bills in their agenda but further work is required so lets keep lobbying and also ensuring we take personal responsibility ourselves for a greener (more ethical) future.
Anyhow let me know your thoughts about the Bills. Thanks.

The US Presidential Race Whos the Greenest of them All?

The presidential race here in the States is really heating up! When Im not working I am glued to the tv watching CNN! I think this has got to be the most exciting race sincewell since who knows as this is the first time we have had a qualified female candidate and black male candidate to go with our usual white male candidates. But who cares! What I really want to know is who is the GREEN candidate of the bunch.
Since our candidates have whittled down a bit I will focus on those still in the race. Let me first fully disclose I am a registered Democrat but in the spirit of fairness I will keep my opinions to myself and just report on the facts. You decide!
The Democrats
Barack Obama- Senator Obama introduced an energy and climate plan in 2007. He calls for improving energy efficiency in the U.S. by 50 percent by 2030 and all new buildings in the US to be carbon neutral by 2030. He supports a phase-out of incandescent light bulbs by 2014. He proposes an increase in research and development for biofuels renewable energy and other clean technologies. He proposes raising fuel-economy standards for automobiles to 40 miles per gallon and light trucks to 32 mpg by 2020. He was a co-sponsor of the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act and he calls for cutting U.S. carbon dioxide emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. He hopes to accomplish this through a cap-and-trade system that would auction off 100 percent of emissions permits making polluters pay for the CO2 they emit.
Hillary Clinton Senator Clintons campaign has been carbon neutral! She supports a goal of the US getting 25 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. She supports raising fuel-economy standards to 40 miles per gallon by 2020 and 55 mpg by 2030. She wants the US to cut its consumption of foreign oil by two-thirds of projected levels by 2030. She also proposes a cap and trade system similar to Senator Obamas; to reduce U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050 and would auction off 100 percent of the emission permits as well as other measures. Senator Clinton has been a huge advocate for energy independence throughout her campaign.
The Republicans
John McCain- Senator McCain has been a leader on cutting greenhouse gas emissions and is probably the greenest Republican candidate of the group! He too supports a cap and trade system for cutting greenhouse gas emissions and opposes the carbon tax. Hes against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He supports the use of nuclear power as an alternative energy source and a way to reduce carbon emissions and he wants to find a way to use our coal resources without emitting more greenhouse gases. Global warming would be a top issue for his presidency. He spoke out against the current administrations lack of action on the climate change issue! (He will be the oldest president ever if elected. Even older than Reagan!)
Mike Huckabee Former Governor Huckabee is unsure if humans are responsible for climate change but supports the cutting of greenhouse gas emissions because its the right thing to do. He supports raising fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon by the year 2020. He supports the expansion of nuclear power. He believes we have a moral and religious obligation to protect the earth and says as president he will send Congress his comprehensive plan for energy independence (yet no one knows what it is?!).
Ron Paul Former Congressman Paul doesnt have much to say on environmental issues at all. He thinks the free market/private companies should have more control of it and the government should stay out of it and see what happens. He supports all offshore drilling. He too doesnt believe humans have contributed to climate change. He would end any special benefits to energy companies.
The choice is yours America choose wisely!

Marine Bill update

Written by admin

Im back! Regular GGG readers may have noticed that it has been some time since I wrote a post for this fantastic blog and I would like to apologise for that. However I hope that you will forgive me as I have been in the middle of selling my house and relocating. Whilst I have lots of interesting news that I could post on GGG I thought that I would start off by providing you all with an update about the Marine Bill Campaign.
Marine and Coastal Access Bill
After extensive campaigning from a wide range of environmental and conservation organisations the UK Government has included the Marine Bill (now called the Marine and Coastal Access Bill) in its draft legislative programme. This is absolutely fantastic news for the environment and marine life however before we all get excited I would like to highlight that whilst there is a strong indication that it will be mentioned in the Queens speech (and thus be brought forward to Parliament) there is no guarantee.
Good but could be better
I have read a couple of different summary documents for the Marine and Coastal Access Bill (not yet had time to read the whole draft Bill in great detail) and from what I can gather and what marine experts have informed me (including Lisa Chilton the Marine Development Manager at the Wildlife Trust) the Bill is good but could be a lot better. For example there is concern over the following points:

Political music revolution

Music has the power to heal cross borders spread ideas inspire and yes bring the people together. Can it also help improve the environment? End wars? Create gender and racial equality?
I think that it can. Historically emotive music with powerful lyrics has played a vital role in a wide range of causes. From the marching songs of the suffragettes to anti-war protests music has helped to unite people together and helped political campaigns.
Categorized by causes here are a few songs containing powerful messages:

Green Festive Fun This Season

Written by admin

With the Christmas season a few weeks away now I thought it would be a good time to update you all on the upcoming green Christmas fairs fetes and gatherings this month and next. If youre like me and find the High Street slightly souless and far too hectic in the run up to Christmas try searching out a local green Christmas event near you where you can buy from independent handmade and green traders.
The one thing I love when I visit these sort of events is the sheer variety of stallholders exhibiting. You may get an international charity selling sponsored goat gifts and farm tools next to crafters who have refashioned reclaimed fabrics into wonderful recycled creations next to beautiful willow sculptures and woodland crafts. Its often a great way to spend a wintery afternoon and one Id recommend to all of you looking for gifts that make a difference this Christmas.
To kick off the round up of seasonal fare Im organising GreenFinders third Green Christmas Fair in Leamington on Saturday 12th December 11-3. There will be green and ethical stalls along with refreshments Dr Bike and a clothes swap. Green Santa and his elves will putting in an appearance too. More details here.
In Birmingham the local Friends of the Earth group are holding a Green Christmas Fayre on Saturday 19th December at the Exchange Building in Mosely from 11 till 4 and just a few miles down the road in Solihull Fat Fluffs the rabbit rescue centre is hosting a festive fundraiser on Saturday 12th December 12-5.
In Brighton there will be a Jingle Bells and Eco Tales event on 13th December 11-4 at the Old Gas Works opposite the Brighton Marina. Green Santa will have his own green living grotto and there will also be carol singers green speakers and an array of stalls for all the family.
Monkton Wyld Court in Dorset are holding their winter fair on Saturday 28th November 11 till 4 and again there will be a host of seasonal activities going on for all ages.

Veganism Part 1 (The Reasons)

Written by admin

I have recently transgressed (again) from being vegetarian to vegan. Since I was 12 I have been going through stages of being vegetarian and vegan and for about four years I was weak and went back to animal based food and products. However I am now 100% COMMITTED to being vegan and will never ever go back to animal based food or products.
Important! I am not writing this post nor will I be writing the subsequent Veganism posts with the aim of converting you all to being Vegan. Instead I am writing about veganism to share with you an element of my life and also to hopefully start a discussion / debate on GGG how our lifestyle choices can affect the planet and even our health (whether in negative or positive ways)
So you may be asking Why vegan? Well I personally believe in the vegan principles and ethics. Also I am now 100% committed to being vegan because it is better for the environment and also my health.
Principles and Ethics
Some may argue that we are born omnivores (meat and veg) and that eating and using animal based products is only natural. But is killing any animal (including human) natural? Is exploiting any animal (including human) keeping them locked up in pain and suffering natural?
I dont think that it is natural at all. Yes in the animal kingdom and in the circle of life some other animals kill other animals for food and some even fun. But these animals do not have choice as humans we have a choice to choose that no animal including humans suffer in order for us to survive as a species. We do not need to eat animals to survive. We do not need to exploit anyone or anything including animals humans or the planet to survive.

For more information about vegan principles and ethics then please watch the The philosophy of Vegan Values: The practice of non-violence Youtube video go to the Veganism article on Wikipedia or go to The Vegan Society website.
Environmental Benefits
Being a vegan is better for the environment compared to an animal based diet because fewer resources are used.
Here is a simple demonstration:
Land + Water + Energy = Crops
Land + Water + Energy + Crops = Livestock and dairy products
I could go into this in much further detail but the post would be far too long. However hopefully from the simple diagram you can see by eating meat or having dairy products additional resources are being used. So to me it makes sense to just eat the crops. Yes energy and land is needed to grow crops and I will write more about vegan farming / agriculture in another post.
If you want more information about the environmental benefits of being vegan then please check out an interesting online essay called Logical Environmental Reasoning for a Vegetarian Lifestyle.
Also some food for thought is in

Book Review: Do good lives have to cost the earth?

Written by admin

Have you ever considered whether good lives have to cost the earth? Well a diverse group of people have considered the question and their answers were documented in a book (with the question as the title) edited by Andrew Simms and Jo Smith.
Before I started reading the book I already had an answer to the question myself and that is No. It has always been my belief and my experience (even as a child) that a good / happy life does not have to cost the earth. To me the simple / free pleasure are always the best for example:
* Just peacefully being with my loved ones
* Volunteering my time to help people and also the planet
*Breathing the fresh air of the countryside
*The taste of freshly picked organic food from my garden
*The beautiful sound of bird song
*Walking along the beach with my fiancé
As you may have gathered from some of my posts I always aim to consume as little as possible in life as it is my belief and the book also supports this that.

7 Eco Tips To Beat The Credit Crunch

Written by admin

At the moment we cant seem to escape the doom and gloom of the economic downturn and predicted recession. With soaring oil and food prices one positive that may well come out of the situation is that people will curb their spending which will in turn lead to a cut in consumption and less wastage of resources.

Living a green lifestyle and saving money in my view has always gone hand in hand so I have picked 7 ways you can cut your carbon footprint and your budget at the same time.
1.Buy preloved
Find your nearest furniture reuse centre tip shop car boot sale or local charity shops and get your hands onsome great preloved bargains. Buying clothes books cds furniture and household items second hand is a great way of recycling and saving money.
2.Ditch your motor and join a car club

Car clubs are growing in popularity and schemes exist mainly in bigger cities down south although hopefully it wont be long before they spread nationwide. If you are a city dweller ditching your car and joining a car club can save you literally thousands of pounds a year. It is estimated that for every member that joins a car club they reduce their car usage by 50%
3.Work from home
Working from home not only saves you time and money its often greener too. Cutting transport time and petrol costs are the main benefits but there are many more reasons why its greener to work from home.
4.Grow your own food
Growing your own fruit veg and herbs not only saves you money but also reduces food miles and waste packaging. I love gardening myself and find it a great way to relax breathe in the fresh air and unwind after a hard days work.
5.Cycle to save money
Cycling to work or nipping into town on your bike has so many benefits. Parking is free its great exercise zero emmissions cheap as chips and fun to boot. If you dont have a bicycle post a message on your local freecycle group or check out your nearest tip shop for a preloved one
6.Embrace the Downshifting Movement
Downshifting is about slowing down your pace of life and finding a better worklife balance. This means embracing living with less and leading a simpler cheaper greener and happier life. Perfect for those of you out there wanting to save cash. To learn more about the movement visit the downshifting website and for some easy downshifting tips to get you started visit this link.
7. Plan a weekly menu
Even Gordon Brown has warned us about the amount of food we waste and it is estimated that an average household throws away a staggering

The Iron Man Goes Green

Written by admin

Some time back I blogged about the first carbon neutral triathlon which my sister helped organise with the Crystal Palace Tri club as she was concerned about the environmental effect of the race. It involved making the event as environmentally friendly as possible and generally making competitors marshalls and visitors aware of the impact of the race and encouraging them to help reduce this.
After returning from a lovely holiday in Nice this week which included watching my sister compete in the Iron Man France competition which involves a 4km swim followed by a 180km bike ride topped off with a marathon. (No Ive not made a mistake with the numbers and distances they really do make them run swim and cycle that far) I was pleased to see that the organisers had taken some measures to address their eco-responsibility.
As soon as competitors entered an expo area to register for the race there were stands which had information about the recycling facilities available and the importance of the flora and fauna in the region along with other related info. Each competitor was given a pack which included a supplement about the green aims for the race. I wont list all their efforts but those of you who are interested can read more about their mission here.
With over 2500 competitors eating energy bars and drinking water on the move it was estimated that the level of waste would be no small matter. Along with almost 70000 spectators in Nice and in many of the villages along the cycle route litter was also an issue that had to be tackled.
Although there could have been other strategies Im glad that the organisers had a green policy in place and that they made a great effort in their first attempt at making the event sustainable. They had to start somewhere and Im hoping they will build on this years race to make the next competition even more of a low impact affair.
Lets hope other sporting events take their lead as vast amounts of energy and waste could be saved not to mention the potential for engaging the public in being greener.

Going Green You Know Things Have Gone Too Far When

Written by admin

Were here on Green Girls Global so its a fair assumption that were into being green and doing our bit for the planet. Were probably keen enthusiastic to varying degrees and generally interested in making a difference to the environment.
But sometimes things can go a little bit too far.
When youre passionate about something its easy to get carried away with your enthusiasm. And from the other persons perspective our behaviour can end up being downright strange!
Going green is one of those risky areas where rational behaviour easily pops out of the window for a cup of organic herbal tea with the fairies.Going green is supposed to be about caring for the planet reconnecting with the seasons and generally being what used to be called a

Garden to plate

Written by admin

On my first official post as a GGG editor I would like to introduce you all to one of my favourite places my garden and my gardening history.

When I was 21 I decided it was time to get on the property ladder however I didnt have much of an income to get my dream house which would be a farm (will be dreaming for a long time) however I found a bargain of a house which had a farmhouse / cottage feel to it and a reasonable sized garden.
As soon as I moved in I wanted to get growing vegetables and flowers however I first needed to transform the garden which was just grass and patio. My only real experience of gardening at this point was helping my granddad on his allotment when I was a little girl. Thus inspired by my time with him when I was younger and his most prized possession The Readers Digest Food from your garden book (which I inherited when he sadly died) I began my hobby as an amateur gardener.

Over the last 4 years I have developed my gardening skills through trial and error and slowly created a garden that suits my needs. I have various vegetable plots scattered about native hedging and wildflowers a rock garden a pond mini orchard (comprising 4 fruit trees and lots of fruit bushes) lots of pots with herbs in and a pagoda that my fiancé and I built with our own hands using felled wood from a local nature reserve. I enjoy spending time in my garden especially first thing in the morning when it is all tranquil as none of the neighbours are arguing.

I must admit though over the last few months I have neglected my garden and although I prefer it slightly wild as it is better for wildlife it had gone very wild.
I thought that seeing as I was on annual leave today I would spend some quality time gardening. Wow. It was amazing the sun was shining the bees were busy collecting nectar and I got stuck in doing a bit of tidying up.
At the end of the afternoon I harvested a range of produce (pictured) and created a delicious healthy meal it literally was from garden to plate. Whilst eating I realised how fortunate I was to be able to nip into my garden for food and how environmentally friendly it is. No chemicals have been used no transport was needed no packaging. Growing your own veg is really good for the environment and you dont need lots of space if you live in a flat and have a balcony you can even grow them in pots even on your windowsill. If you want some gardening advice then why not check out this fantastic site that I discovered today called You grow girl the site owner Gayla is extremely inspiring.

Veg Patch Diaries #6

Written by admin

Harvesting at last!
OK harvesting is definitely too grand a word for a handful of tiny tomatoes and a cucumber but theyre edible! Actually Im almost embarrassed to write this post after Anna-Lisas Garden to Plate article but here goes anyway.
As I was looking around at my plants and taking pictures for the blog I realised actually how much Ive learned from this practice run of growing. Previously Id only ever grown tomatoes which is no huge achievement as they are pretty tough and provide lots of fruit but this year I tried a variety of veg with no prior knowledge or previous experience at all. I wish I would say that despite this lack of knowledge Ive yielded a healthy crop that could feed us for the year but sadly thats far from the truth.
However from what Ive learned I know that next year will be better. There are 3 simple things (within my control) that I need to improve:
1. More space
Ive realised that I grew too many of each plant within a limited amount of garden and greenhouse and they didnt have enough room to grow. For the things that I grew in pots the pots were too small.
2. More food
OK this is a pretty poor thing not to do and I dont have any other excuse other than being ridiculously busy this summer. The poor plants simply needed to be fed more often I can see that theyre lacking nutrition and Im still expecting them to provide me with fruit and veg. BIG lesson learned there and very easy to fix.
3. Get tougher on pests
Although the slugs snails and caterpillars have just about obliterated by cabbage broccoli onions and leeks I just couldnt bring myself to use the necessary means to stop them. I thought I could keep them away using various barriers but the slugs and snails on my garden are determined and have no mercy on the poor plants I have to step it up next year.
Beyond my control less rain and more sunshine would be a huge help too!
Oh and one more thing I have to start reading about how to do this stuff instead of just guessing. Its difficult for me though Im just not a read the instructions person.
Anyway some of the latest developments in the garden and greenhouse are the tomatoes and cucumbers as I mentioned already. There are many more tomatoes but theyre not ripe yet and the other cucumbers are still tiny.
The sweet peppers are only just flowering and the sweetcorn is just showing some tiny cobs (which I found very exciting indeed).
I thought that the potatoes I threw in a bucket had died but when I went to empty the bucket I saw they had produced a few baby potatoes although they were green so I cant eat them.
The poor veg patch itself which started it all is looking more and more like a giant piece of Nottingham lace with hundreds of holes from slug and caterpillar jaws. The broccoli keeps getting taller though so there might be some hope there.

An apple a day

Written by admin

What do you do with 20 kilos of apples?

What cant you do! After harvesting a ridiculous amount of apples from my future in-laws allotment plot I have spent evenings baking and making various apple related goods including cider vinegar apple chutney apple pies apple tarts apple and cinnamon buns.

As well as stocking up my freezer and pantry I have distributed these goods between family friends and work colleagues. All of whom have been most grateful it does go to show you dont need to give people expensive gifts to make them happy.
If you do have space in your garden I reccommend that you do plant some fruit trees and bushes so you can make your own delicious food too. Even in a small space you can have fruit trees because you can purchase restricted rooted trees which will grow in pots. So go on get planting a fruit tree this autumn.

Pink is Green (washing)!?

I must get this off my chest as it has been on my mind for some time now. Eco renovation dilemmas

Written by admin

After moving into our first home a 3-bed terrace in Worthing we are finally getting around to doing some work on it. Up until now we might as well have been living in rented accommodation as we still have the previous residents carpets and wallpaper in situ as well as their cooker fridge lampshades and curtains!
Of course as a trying-to-be-green girl Im keen for us to do the renovations in as eco-friendly a way as possible but the inevitable purse implications are hitting before weve even peeled off the first strip of wallpaper (which incidentally covers the entire house all walls and ceilings too!).
So Im posting here in the hope that fellow green girls will offer us some support and inspiration and perhaps their own eco home stories!
Our first job is to replace the big window in our kitchen (that doesnt open!) with French doors onto the back garden and replace the back door with a window. As well be taking out the original PVC frames now is the time to think about materials for the new frames.
At first we were considering soft wood but due to the position of the doors (south facing lashed by wind and rain and burnt by the sun) our builder advised against this option as they would need treating every year and would need replacing in about 5 years anyway.
We then headed over to www.greenspec.co.uk who advise the following:

Veg Patch Diaries 2008

Written by admin

Although Im not going to write in any great detail about my veg growing adventures this year I just wanted to do a quick update and let you know (those of you who are interested) that despite not much success last year we havent given up on the good life yet.
Well its not quite The Good Life (I still love Tom & Barbaras lifestyle and Margos fabulous fashion) in fact Ive reduced the numbers and types of veggies this year.
2008s veg patch includes potatoes sweetcorn spinach cucumber sweet peppers lettuce tomatoes (of course) jalapenos rocket and radish. Radish are so easy to grow that you can give yourself an encouraging pat on the back every time you crunch one of your home-grown in a lovely salad.

The things I learned from last year and have tried to improve on this time are:
Start sowing seeds earlier (well I did actually fail on this one because wedding arrangements sapped veg growing preparation time in April)
Be realistic Theres no point sowing hundreds of seeds if you dont have the time or space to nurture them to your table. I was not realistic last year
Be tougher on pests I just cant kill the creatures in my garden but I know I cant ask them nicely not to eat the greens either so Ive tried to put them off with marigolds and gravel. The results? So far so good!
More food Yes I know this is obvious.
Hope for the right amounts of sunshine and rain Still working on this one!
Unfortunately I dont have a lot of time to spend in my garden and so Im starting small and building up. You never know next year we may get chickens for our very own eggs and the year after that who knows?! The Good Life here we come!!
For any of you who havent seen the old 70s TV show The Good Life. Heres a classic snippet from one of the episodes:

Its all about the greenhouse this year

Written by admin

My great uncle Bill used to spend hours in his greenhouse. Although he had a beautiful garden he wasnt necessarily working he just used to sit in there enjoying the tranquility. As a child I didnt understand it.
Nowadays of course I do understand. In the mayhem of everyday life work and chasing around I can easily understand what a peaceful place the greenhouse can be and thats why Im concentrating my efforts there this year.

Since starting to try and grow veggies properly in 2007 the main thing Ive learned is to be realistic. When you have a working life which hardly gives you the time to eat you cant expect to suddenly find the time to produce a feast from your garden too.
During my first year of the Veg Patch Diaries I was ambitious with a list of fruit veg and herbs as long as your arm. The main mistake I made was to try and run before I could walk and it quickly sapped all of the fun and enjoyment out of gardening. Keeping on top of it became a chore and when I had to neglect the poor little plants because of work and other commitments it felt like a big old waste defeating the point of trying to bring some self-sufficiency to our little semi in Nottingham.
So badly had we neglected our garden that until today the mouldy corpses of last years tomato and sweet pepper plants were still in the greenhouse. But inspired by this suddenly spring-like weather we set-to today to give our greenhouse a little TLC ready for a select few fruit and veg seedlings. To make the most of the elusive sunshine we get here in the UK we cleared anything that might block light from the greenhouse and cleaned it right up.

So here we are nice and early in the growing season with the new outlook that growing food doesnt have to feel like housework. If its manageable it will be enjoyable and who knows productive too. In a cold country like ours we can make the most of our greenhouse all year round. We dont have to over do it the more exclusive our little veggie collection the more attention we can give and less waste well create.
If youre wondering about the veg patch it hasnt been forgotten. This year were using it to grow potatoes and we already have the Maris Piper seed potatoes to get cracking. The patch doesnt get enough light for sun-loving plants like sweetcorn but for the good old potato itll do just fine.

Whats your everyday eco?

Written by admin

Ive been thinking a lot lately about how being busy everyday can affect how green you live. If Im strapped for time then I take short cuts I wouldnt take if I could be a bit more leisurely and those short cuts are not always eco friendly.
I guess they key is to work green habits into your daily routines. Im not talking about grand gestures like buying a hybrid car or holidaying in an expensive eco-retreat thats not realistic for most of us. Im talking about those things that we can do all the time in our own home and garden.
Heres a quick run down of 10 of the things we do in our house. Id love to learn more so do share your everyday eco habits with us.
1. Benevolent Brands?
Ive put this one first because I think its the most important here and Ive been doing this since I could spend my own pocket money. Get to know which brands are lacking in positive eco & ethical credentials and show them that you dont approve by avoiding their products in your weekly shop. Im a great believer in consumer power and theres nothing easier than not doing something not buying something. Online ethical shopping tool Gooshing can help you know the score.
2. Keep it Fresh
Instead of buying foil cling film or plastic sandwich bags which will just get thrown away wash out and save a couple of ice cream and margarine tubs to keep food fresh in your fridge.
3. White Vinegar is Your Friend
I have always been a bit dubious about eco cleaning products but one that is a definite winner and as cheap as chips (tastes good on chips too!) is vinegar. Theres nothing like white vinegar to get rid of grease and make surfaces lovely and shiny. I use it on stainless steel windows and mirrors and I dont have to worry about breathing in nasty chemicals when Im using it.
4. Natures Bodyguards
Instead of using pesticides to keep aphids from munching on your beloved tomatoes and cucumbers let nature do the work for you. For some reason a lot of creepy crawlies that like your veggie plants hate marigolds so plant them alongside and let them protect the fruits of your labours.
5. Home Made Labels
Whilst were talking gardens here are a few ways you can recycle bits and bobs from indoors to use outdoors Keep bottle tops to put on the end of garden canes to protect yourself (especially your eyes) from the sharp edges. Cut yoghurt pots into strips and use them as washable plant labels. Keep a tub or container handy in your kitchen to chuck in tea bags and veg peelings ready to take out to the compost bin.
6. Old Fashioned Washing
I love hanging washing on the line I think its because its one of those jobs that tells us the fine weather is finally here. Although as us UK based folks know fine weather is elusive here. So rather than heading to the tumble dryer (we dont own one) get yourself a clothes horse to dry your washing indoors when its rainy outdoors.
7. Sweet Scent
There are so many air fresheners on the market right now I couldnt possibly name them all. Theyre so sophisticated too spraying out a smell on a timer or whenever you walk in the room but theyre just unnecessary. Goodness knows what chemicals theyre spurting at you and the amount of plastic that must go into making them makes my head spin. We keep a pretty wooden box (recycled from a wine case) near the front door with a handful of potpourri in it. When the smell fades just sprinkle a little of your favourite essential oil in there. You could even get some lemon juice or sprigs of lovely smelling herbs like Rosemary. Hmmmmm
8. Cut Down on the Meat
Until I met Sophie from Food For Change I thought I knew the implications of agriculture especially farming for meat. I knew nothing. The amount of resources that go into feeding and keeping animals for food is mind blowing. Its a devastating industry not only for the animals but for the environment and humans too. Cutting down or cutting out animal products from your diet truly can help relieve this. Read my interview with Sophie or visit www.foodforchange.org.uk to find out more.
9. Make Second Hand First
This is my favourite tip because its about shopping shopping and feeling good about it. OK let me just spit it out. If you have hang-ups about second hand get over it! Antiques are second hand and no-one has issues with that. Whether looking for large items like furniture or small things like tea cups or clothes I always go for second hand first. Lots of the furniture in our house is second hand was very cheap or free and after a little restoration beautiful. Buying second hand means you are not using more of the worlds resources to get something thats new for you. Charity shops are the best because they are full of hidden gems and buying them contributes to something really worthwhile. Why line greedy companies pockets only to buy the same old beige uniform items? Get creative mix and match and have fun.
10. Take Your Time
I have to confess Im working on this one. Rushing around causes me to take short cuts and make decisions that arent good for the environment like driving to the shops because its quicker than walking and grabbing a take-away rather than cooking a home made meal.
Im far from perfect on the green front but Id like to learn more. Share your everyday eco and lets make a habit of it.

Using plants as Medicines

Written by admin

There are many reasons to use plants as medicines. For example despite many drugs having their origins in plant life pharmaceutical giants are huge polluters not just from the processes of the factories but the secondary pollution caused by the patients themselves when medications pass through their body into the ecosystem. Sewerage treatment works clean up as much of this as they can but there are many chemicals that slip through the net and circulate back into our reservoirs plant and animal life finally passing back into our bodies in the form of drinking water. Now we find CODEX Alimentarius creeping upon us likely to undermine the choices of those of us who prefer to use herbal remedies. We do not know for sure what the wider implications will be but it seems likely that many of the herbal remedies we have all had access to being removed entirely (due to their safety and efficiency not having been

Energy without costing the earth building sustainable rural communities

Written by admin

Much of the wild land in Scotland is under threat from large scale developments to meet our future energy needs. In contrast to this approach to the future we have a vision of a more sustainable future where communities in remote areas meet their energy needs without costing the earth.
I work for the John Muir Trust within the Climate Change and Sustainable Communities project. The Trust protects some of the most beautiful remote and wild land in Scotland both directly and in partnership with local communities.
Many of the rural communities we have a relationship with have already started investing in a more sustainable future. You can see what these communities are doing by checking out my blog.
One example we are keen to see replicated comes from the Isle of Eigg with whom we have been sharing experiences. This remote island community leads the way in Scotland as a model of what is possible. Two women Lucy Conway and Maggie Fyffe along with Project Officer Tasha Lancaster have spearheaded the exciting work here. They have developed a two pronged approach which aims to make the community self-sufficient in energy terms within three years.
The first strand of their plan focuses on the software through an education and outreach program called Islands Going Green which recognises the permanent changes needed to bring about a more sustainable future will only come about when there is major buy-in from the whole community.
Islands Going Green encourage people to take action in small communities of around 100 people as that is a human scale. This could be a street a social club a workplace where you commit to having your own green island. They have had lots of fun social events on their journey and have gained huge community support.
The second strand is focused on the hardware elements looking to energy efficiency and conservation measures along with a cocktail of micro renewables to decrease their use of fossil fuels. They wisely are not relying on one source alone for renewable energy but have invested in a mix of wind solar biomass and hydro schemes. Already they seem further advanced in their thinking than the government.

Easy Ways to Make Your Home Green

Written by admin

Recycle recycle recycle – It is as easy as taking the aluminum can and dropping it in the recycle bin. Along with plastic bottles newspapers and glass bottles this is a simple and effective method.
Use Paint that does not contain VOC Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are toxic chemicals found in furniture tables wallpaper paint and basically anything that is manmade or is sprayed with manmade chemicals. One easy way is to avoid paints and wallpaper that contain VOC. If you are not sure about the ingredients then definitely buy well known low toxic paints (like Ieko or Earthborn).
Buy Already Used Craigslist is gold for great products. Why spend $2000 on a sofa when you can buy it on craigslist for $300 AND avoid the fate of the landfill. People are always moving in a rush take advantage of that by buying great furniture products that dont end up in the garbage and pollute the environment.
Buy Bamboo Bamboo is a grass not a tree and so it grows quickly and is versatile. Bamboo can be used in flooring window blinds or just about any living room furniture. The only downside to bamboo is that it uses a lot of water during reforestation but takes little time to reforest compared to trees.
Stop with the Polystyrene Cups You know it as Styrofoam from the Dow Chemicals Company but actually Styrofoam as a cup does not exist its actually polystyrene . You go to parties and they have Styrofoam cups and plates and it is terrible.
Take cloth bags to the grocery store Those little plastic bags used by grocery stores are flimsy and not recycled by people. Considering that large cities like San Francisco are charging consumers for plastic bags start now and use nice cloth bags. Even a backpack is great for filling up heavier items in it.
Stop with the bottle water – Really? You NEED bottle water? Youre incapable of putting a filter on your tab for 40 bucks and rather spend $1.20 per bottle every day? More than 1.6 Billion bottles are not recycled in the UK each year. Bottled water takes up space. Bottled water is a waste. Bottled water use plastics; which in turn use petroleum. Instead use a hard plastic bottle fill it with water and take it to the gym work car. If you are concerned about tap water not being clean put a filter on. Remember just because its from a bottle doesnt make it clean water either; the Perrier scandal taught a lesson there.

Mountain Rose Herbs Tells Employees to Take a Bike

Written by admin

Known for an uncompromising commitment to organic agriculture and sustainable business practices Mountain Rose herbs is raising their eco-efforts to new heights by launching a new program aimed at helping employees reduce their carbon footprint.
The new program focuses on preventing pollution caused by commuter traffic by offering cash incentives to employees who carpool and bicycle to work. According to the Environmental Defense Fund U.S. autos emit more than 333 million tons of carbon dioxide each year which is more than one-fifth of the nations total carbon dioxide emissions. Thankfully programs like the one offered by Mountain Rose Herbs can make a real difference.
The program is easy to understand track and offers tangible awards. It pays staff members who carpool to work 12-cents per mile for each passenger and for those who bicycle to work 20-cents per mile. In addition to the cash reward for each mile Mountain Rose Herbs also offers a yearly $500 cash bonus to the staff member who has logged the most miles.

Special offer from The Beach Shack Project

Written by admin

The Beach Shack Project specialises in handmade unique pieces of jewellery made from flotsam and Jetsam. Sea glass old Victorian pottery shards driftwood nylon monofilament plastic shells and stones all make up the unusual components used in each design.
Although the beach is a great place to source new objects and inspiration the items gathered whilst beachcombing can also pose a threat to the coastal eco system. For example huge tumbleweed sized balls of monofilament discarded by fisherman or thrown over board can be an unfortunate end for any bird or fish unlucky to become entangled. They are also un-biodegradable so can become a very permanent feature on the beaches. These tangled balls are collected and laboriously unraveled unknotted and even reknotted until the nylon is left in workable strands. These balls are then washed thoroughly in antibacterial soap so they are squeaky-clean and then ready to design with.
I can find working with found materials limiting but this can result in an unusual creative output. It makes you really think about what you are using because you work with what you find.
Currently here at the Beach Shack Project we are working with Surfers Against Sewage by donating a percentage of profits from the reclaimed nylon range of jewellery to their campaign.
Surfers Against Sewage is a campaign group set up by surfers who wanted to use clean safe oceans. One of their missions is to reduce

Delocate delocate delocate!

Written by admin

Sick of seeing a Starbucks on every corner and fancy a non-corporate coffee now and again? Its time for you to get delocating!

Personally Im always on a mission to find a cosy comfy unchained cafe to relax with friends or get down to some serious ethical business. Close to home you have your favourites but when youre out and about the sea of Starbucks can be tough to navigate. So I was delighted to be introduced to Delocator.
Starting in the States (see US Delocator) Delocator is a handy little tool that lets you type in a postcode to find independent cafes within a radius of up to 6km just click delocate to see the results and reviews.
The number of results is an interesting indicator of the type of town youre in. A Brighton postcode brought up 16 whereas Worthing only revealed 3 (all added by yours truly). But this is a community site; it will only work and make small independent cafes more sustainable if we all do our bit.
The next time youre slumped on a sofa supping on Fairtrade coffee and cookies in a cute independent cafe dont fall into a post-caffeine catnap (is that possible?): jot down the name postcode and a few notes on the amenities of the establishment and dash over to delocator.org.uk to let everyone know about it.
And if you happen to be in sunny Worthing and have cafe knowledge exceeding Pestle & Mortar The Denton and Coast let me know maybe we can meet up for a coffee!

Discover Your Local Country Market

Written by admin

A few months back I discovered a hidden gem just a few minutes from the high street in town whilst out shopping. Whilst everyone knows about farmers markets the country markets seem to be a well kept secret.
There are over 12000 local producers who sell their goods at 400 markets throughout the U.K. The Country Markets are a co-operative with their roots going back as far as 1919 when the Agriculture organisation Society (now Defra) sponsored the setting up of co-operative markets to sell surplus produce.
At my local market I can purchase fresh flowers herbs and vegetables home baked pies cakes and quiches honey jams and free range eggs to name but a few. There are also a selection of home made craft items which make for lovely gifts too.
A couple of weeks ago my friend and I went halves on a gigantic pumpkin costing the princely sum of

Food for Change Interview

Written by admin

How much do you know about the food on your plate? How does it impact on you and the world around you?
After quitting meat at 12 years of age I thought I knew my fair share about farming. Well I knew a lot about animal welfare issues but as it turns out not so much about the social and environmental impacts of agriculture.
So what do we know? Carnivores and vegetarians alike can save the environment by switching to organic and local right? Wrong. Its just not that straightforward.
Food is one of the few things we cant opt-out of. We can stop taking long haul flights we can stop using plastic bags but we cant stop eating so we have to get smart about it.
Food for Change is refreshing. At Food for Change you will find an intelligent non-emotive perspective on food. In fact this isnt just a perspective it tackles the issues head on and addresses how our eating habits could make a fairer healthier society which truly respects the natural world.
So here at GGG we are very lucky to have some time to pick the brains of the Food for Change founder Sophie Pritchard. Prepare to have your food view turned upside down..
Q. Sophie welcome to GGG. Food for Change really is different to other websites books and resources about food and the environment. How did it begin and what are your motivations?
Hello! Thank you for the opportunity to be featured on your brilliant website!
My relationship with food reached a turning point when I became vegetarian at the age of 11. In the beginning my choice not to eat meat was solely due to animal welfare issues; I lived opposite a farm and loved to watch the calves being born and one day I made the connection and then there was no turning back.
It wasnt for another ten years that I started learning more about the other impacts of meat. While studying for a masters degree in International Environmental Management I gained a much greater understanding of the environment and all the aspects of everyday life that affect it; one of those being livestock.
The initial idea for Food for Change was born around a year ago whilst I was working for an environmental and social justice organisation. Through my work I discovered much more about the social impacts of environmental destruction and also the urgent need for us to live more sustainably to ensure our choices do not impact the lives of future generations. Meat and dairy are undeniably unsustainable requiring far more land water and energy than plant-based foods.
I became frustrated that environmental organisations continued to turn a blind eye to the environmental impact of livestock particularly when both environmental and humanitarian organisations strongly and publicly oppose biofuels because of their environmental and social impacts when I knew that they caused only a fraction of the problems that the livestock industry does. I asked all these organisations about why they focused on biofuels considering their impacts are the same as meat but lower in scale. They all told me that the issue with biofuels was that they were making matters worse whereas the devastation caused by livestock is long-standing. That didnt seem like a good enough reason to ignore the issue to me.
Q. We all understand the issues of animal welfare in the livestock industry but you also address social health and environmental factors. Can you briefly tell us how current farming and agriculture affects these areas and ultimately human life?
Briefly will be difficult since the list is a long one! Ill try to keep to the main points.
Perhaps the greatest injustice is the amount of food we feed to animals. When I first heard that the vast majority of the crops we grow a third of the worlds cereals and 90% of soy are fed to animals I was shocked. Today I still cant quite believe we feed 754 million tonnes of cereals (1) and over 200 million tonnes of soy (2) to animals every year when there are over 950 million starving people in the world (3).
Much of the environmental and social impacts of the livestock industry come from the intensively farmed crops we grow to feed animals. Beautiful and biodiversity rich forests such as the Amazon are destroyed to make way for grazing cattle or growing soy to feed to animals. Intensive soy plantations use massive amounts of fertilisers and pesticides which poison the ground and waterways. Most soy is also genetically modified particularly in the US Argentina and Paraguay. The dairy industry in particular is keen to promote an image of cows grazing in lush fields in the English countryside but the truth is that they are fed a diet high in soy and grains as are other farmed animals.

Deforestation is responsible for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions (4) since trees release carbon dioxide when they are cut down and burned. Tropical forests are home to many thousands of species of plants birds mammals and reptiles. The forest also provides a home food and livelihoods for indigenous people; all of which are brutally taken away when they are forced to flee the forest when it is cut down and converted to pasture or soy plantations. Many of them move to urban areas and struggle to adjust to a new way of life resulting in poverty and hunger.

Ruminants like cows and sheep are also responsible for methane and nitrous oxide emissions which also contribute to climate change. In total the livestock sector is accountable for 18% of the worlds greenhouse gases (5). Climate change is already responsible for around 150000 deaths per year (6) and an estimated 200 million people will be displaced because of droughts floods and other weather conditions caused by climate change by 2050 (7). Those in developing countries the most vulnerable suffer the most despite the fact that they are least responsible for climate change.
Many studies have showed that animal products cause heart disease and cancer. The World Cancer Research Fund revealed that red meat and in particular processed meats are strongly linked to cancer so much so that the recommended consumption level of sausages and bacon is none at all.
Saturated fats which predominantly come from animal products clog arteries and raise cholesterol levels and blood pressure putting people at risk of heart disease. Whats frightening is that fast food chains such as McDonalds and Burger King are expanding around the world even to developing countries resulting in a rise in meat consumption in countries where it has always previously been very low. Many developing countries dont have National Health Services like we do as their health deteriorates not only do they not understand the cause of their disease but also they have nowhere to go for help.
Q. For anyone wanting to move towards having a more positive diet in terms of how it affects the environment what would you suggest as the first and most valuable step?
People are becoming more aware of the benefits of organic and local food. However evidence shows that environmentally a vegan diet is far better than local and organic. Therefore the best first step is to cut down on your meat and dairy consumption. Once you start exploring dishes free of animal products you soon realise how easy it is and this allows you to increase your number of meat and dairy free meals until you dont consume any at all. Of course not everyone is prepared to become vegan and although this is the ideal every step you take towards veganism makes a real difference.
Q. Sometimes we can make food choices which on the face of it seem to be harmless but are in fact very damaging. How can we learn more about the background to what were eating?
Id like to say that the information is easy to get hold of but in terms of the environmental and social impacts of meat and dairy its well hidden. Food for Change has an email subscription service to keep you up to date on the latest news about the livestock industry and its impacts. I set the website up because this information just wasnt readily available. I also provide links to other sources of relevant information. Groups like Friends of the Earth have a food campaign focusing on genetically modified crops and are a good source of information on wider food issues.
Q. How do you see our food shopping and eating habits 10 years into the future? What are the best and worst case scenarios?
I do believe that food habits are changing. According to the World Cancer Research Fund one in ten people are actively reducing their meat consumption for health reasons. More people are also becoming aware of the issues of intensive agriculture and food miles both strongly related to meat but its a slow process.
My fear is that powerful fast food giants will continue to spread across the globe increasing global meat consumption over and above that related purely to a higher level of population. Whilst industrialised nations will hopefully move towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible diet over the next 10 years the higher consumption of meat in developing countries could completely counteract this.

The good news is that Friends of the Earth launched a livestock campaign a few months ago and Greenpeace have started developing a campaign as well. With these highly influential organisations challenging governments and corporations on their role in the destruction caused by livestock I am optimistic that there will be some policy changes in the next ten years. But change also needs to happen on the ground. Individuals need to recognise the enormous power they have to change our world and not wait for governments to take action. This is where veganism is so powerful.
Whilst we dont yet have the public transport system to allow us all to give up our cars or cheap solar panels and other forms of renewable energy so we can all generate our own energy or the skills and planning infrastructure that allows us to build our own eco-homes; we can all switch to a plant-based diet right now the world is already set up for it.

Have You Ever Been Courgetted?

I had never grown courgettes before.
For some reason I thought they would be really tricky. People used to tell me about the manual pollination training them over frames staggering the harvest stopping them from rotting. Quite frankly it sounded too much like hard work. I decided to stick with easy stuff like runner beans and the occasional potplant tomato.
But this year I planted courgettes.
I didnt bother with the hand pollination the trellis work or any of the other palaver people had warned me about. I just stuck seeds in mud applied water and waited. (My kind of gardening).

Dont Miss The Organic Food Festival on 12th / 13th September!

Written by admin

This years UK Organic Food Festival now in its ninth year looks set to be the biggest and best yet.
Running on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September at Bristol Harbour the festival will be the highlight of the Soil Associations Organic Fortnight.
The Organic Food Festival isnt just about food though.
Its a real celebration of all things organic and natural.
This year there will be recession-busting cookery demonstrations a unique Kids Taste Tent (where the kids get to do the tasting rather than the other way round) live music a winter vegetable planting masterclass and even seminars on how to set up urban gardening communities. Heres where you can find the schedule of events at the Organic Food Festival.
There will be the usual much-loved collection of companies who share a common ecological philosophy along with new names who are doing their bit for the environment. Its a chance for you to meet the people behind your favourite brands do some serious shopping and snap up a bargain along the way.
This years exhibitor list sees the return of some of my favourites including:
Gartner Organic Wool (you have to pop along and see the amazing range of natural colours this guys sheep produce. And hes really friendly!)
Spiezia skincare who not only do amazing work with getting our cosmetics to be 100% organic but also do some great things in their local community ask them theyll probably blush
Andy and Dave Hamilton from Self-sufficient-ish. Theyre a fab duo who have done so much to promote growing-your-own. Andy and I used to share a double-page spread in the now-defunct Tastes of Britain magazine so Im looking forward to finally getting to meet him! He knows his stuff!
Abaca Organics are the only company in the UK producing certified organic mattresses pop along and meet them if you fancy a lie down and a fascinating natter!
You might also want to visit the Soil Association stand to talk to them about their work as a charity and consider becoming a member there are usually lots of goodies for those who join on the day plus free entry into the Festival for members old and new.
In total there are over 150 other companies all excited about the chance to meet directly with their customers.
Youll find organic cleaning products organic bedding organic clothing more food than you could reasonably even sniff in a day and even an organic beer tent and bar
Itll be the fourth time Ive been to the Organic Food Festival and Im glad theyve shifted it by a week this year so I dont have to miss my friends wedding on the 5th just kidding
If any of you are in the area and fancy going along how about telling everyone via the comments box and maybe we could arrange to meet up?
Im really looking forward to it.

The Non-GMO Shopping Guide

Written by admin

The Institute for Responsible Technology has launched a new website for all those Americans (more than 50% of the population) who said they would avoid GMO enhanced food if it was labeled. Its called the Non-GMO Shopping guide. Polls show 9 out of 10 Americans want GMOs labled the US does NOT require labeling! What are GMOs? Genetically Modified Organisms or gene-spliced food. You take the genes of one species and put it into another. This is not the same as splicing a tree with another tree this is more like splicing a tree with a cow!
Europe which is always light years ahead of us have many countries that are GM free or reject GMOs. The World Trade Organization will not let any country outright ban GMO products.
The IRT website lists popular brands that dont use ingredients from the eight GM crops such as soy and corn. It also list dairy products that dont allow the controversial GM bovine growth hormone. Needless to say I have bookmarked this site and have sent the link to friends and family!

A hand made statement

Written by admin

Influenced by the talented dressmakers and crafters that I meet at our Nottingham Stitched Up Group and The Textile Workshop Im about to embark on proper clothes making and creating my own accessories.
Ive dabbled here and there making few things that I do actually use including a couple of bags a bit of jewellery and a summer top but nows the time to get serious. Why? Well for two reasons really. The first being that I love the idea of creating exactly what I want something that expresses how I feel and actually fits me. The second reason is because making things myself means I can decide where I source the materials doing it as sustainably as I can.

The thought of trying to learn the many many techniques that go into transforming fabric beads threads buttons yarns and zips into something that I would be seen outdoors wearing is both daunting and thrilling. Im excited by the idea of one day being able to picture an item of clothing and then make it a reality. I dont know whether Ill be any good at turning my hand to this skill but I will start as I mean to go on. I want to conserve energy reduce waste support ethical manufactuers be more independent AND be inspired.
So here is my hand made statement.
I cant pretend that this is my idea actually Ive shamelessly pilfered it from one of my favourite blogs Crafting a Green World. The timing was so right when I read their A Green Crafting Manifesto post that I decided to apply it to my clothes making (and crafting) plans. So here goes:
If I know how to make an item of clothing or accessory I will opt to do that before buying a similar brand new item.
I will always aim to use vintage second hand and recycled materials first. As an alternative or where these are not available I will seek organic or fair trade fabrics yarns etc.
Other than dowloading online patterns I will aim to use second hand paper patterns or books or loan these from the library or friends
I will continue to learn new skills and techniques and share these new found skills with others.
OK a teeny-tiny step in the self-sufficiency direction. Watch this space for updates on how it goes!

UW students develop low-cost solar-powered water purification system

Eco Factor: Low-cost water disinfection system powered by solar energy.
The idea of using solar energy for purifying water has been around for ages and is still practiced in different parts of the globe. However now a team of students from the University of Washington have come up with a bright idea taking a little bit of technical help to devise a low-cost solution to a global problem. Using simple parts the student team has developed a cheap setup solution for drinking water in poor areas which has won them a $40000 prize.
The team reports that using parts from a keychain that blinks in response to light they have created a device that monitors how light is passing through a water-filled bottle and how many particulates are obstructing the light. When enough particulates are removed the sensor alerts that the water is now safe to drink. The student team believes that the device can be retailed at just $3.40 which makes it a viable solution for many parts of the world.

Teach us a lesson in ethical fashion

For just over a year Ive been a member of the Gedling Fairtrade Group involved in campaigning for Fairtrade and working towards Fairtrade Town status for Gedling Borough.
23rd February 2009 sees the beginning of Fairtrade Fortnight a time to celebrate and shout about Fairtrade even more than usual. The Gedling Fairtrade Group has lots of plans for the fortnight including a glamorous fashion show and were fortunate enough to have the support of 3 fashion marketing students from the famous Nottingham Trent Universitys School of Art & Design.
These 3 motivated students are all specialising in ethical fashion for their final dissertations. This is their choice but when I met them I wondered whether there are whole courses dedicated to ethical fashion. If so just imagine what education could do to the industry producing designers makers and marketers with a sound understanding of the social and environmental impacts of their trade and a drive to make it better.
So of course my next port of call was Google I thought that if I found at least a little information about ethical fashion courses then I could share it here and it may be useful for potential students. I honestly had no idea what I would find but I was genuinely (and pleasantly) surprised

This research project looks at the role designers can play in creating textiles which have a reduced impact on the environment.
Fashioning an Ethical Industry
Staff and Student Workshops
This Labour Behind the Label Project provides tutor and student courses which focus on themes related to working conditions and workers rights in garment manufacture.
The Higher Education Academy (UK)
Teaching Ethical Fashion
This was a conference which took place in April and although it has passed I though it was still worth a mention just in case it takes place again next year. This event was for tutors and educators teaching ethical issues on fashion related courses.
Im sure there are many more courses workshops and seminars in the UK and overseas. If you know of more ethical fashion courses get in touch and we can share them here on GGG.

NASA researchers envisions airborne wind turbines for renewable energy

Written by admin

http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2010/12/29/floating-wind-turbines_1_GNK4J_69.jpg

Eco Factor: Airborne wind turbines to use high velocity winds for more power.
While onshore and offshore wind farms are common in different parts of the world a NASA researcher is envisioning a future where wind farms will not be built on land or the sea but will actually take up the free space above the ground. These airborne turbines would spin with greater speeds found at high altitudes and send power back to Earth via nanotube tether cables. Swarms of these energy harvesting turbines could stay aloft for a year and could easily be reeled in during storms.
NASA aerospace engineer Mark Moore believes that the idea is definitely worth giving a thought as wind speed is more consistent and its velocity much higher at higher altitudes. At an altitude of 2000 feet once can get between eight and 27 times the power production. The plan does seem ingenious but the vision does come with its own set of drawbacks. Researchers opine that floating wind turbines could have a two-mile protected no-fly zone which will cause problems for airliners and unmanned aircrafts of the future.

Self-sufficiency in your wardrobe

Written by admin

Theres nothing like the sense of achievement when youve made something yourself whether its a lovely meal a birthday card or a piece of writing the creative process can be very rewarding not to mention low in cost and eco-friendly.
The same goes for your wardrobe making items of clothing or accessories means you can have so much more control over the sourcing of the materials and production of the finished item. Thats one of the reasons Im learning dress-making skills. Dont get me wrong I think we should leave the good stuff to the experts the makers and designers who do this professionally but a little self-sufficiency in the wardrobe can go a long way.

I love browsing websites like Modish and Indie Fixx looking for independent designers. Especially those who use innovative techniques to create clothing and accessories in a responsible and ethical way. However as much as I love them I cant always afford them and it leaves my fingers twitching wanting to make my own goodies.

Eco Factor: Innovative design harnesses wind from any direction to produce renewable energy.
While researchers at NASA have put their bets on airborne wind turbines to produce a large amount of energy researchers over at ZENA System are taking a different approach. The company has unveiled an innovative design for a wind energy generating system that is able to harness wind from any direction. Christened the Wind Tower the system accommodates a power plant a tourist facility and a desalination plant in one structure.

The 50m tall structure captures wind at any speed at any height and turns it into wind masses with three-point wind compression. The wind is then accelerated in the tunnel from where it rushes toward the exit point. The exit is equipped with air pressure adjustment and produces powerful wind masses which are then used to generate large amounts of wind energy. The creators opine that the innovative system overturns conventional aerodynamics theory and Betz Limit Value theory.

Michael Jantzens Solar Winds Desert Hotel proposal utilizes sun and wind for power

Written by admin

http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2011/01/05/solar-winds-desert-hotel_1_hBB91_69.jpg

Eco Factor: Sustainable hotel proposal designed to be powered by renewable sources of energy.
The brainchild of architect and designer Michael Jantzen the Solar Winds Desert Hotel is a conceptual design for a large luxury eco hotel that is powered by solar and wind energy. With 140 rooms the hotel design is symbolically evolved from thoughts about certain desert plants and how they function in hot dry climate.

The symbolic leaves of the Solar Winds Desert Hotel would shade various facilities at the base such as restaurants a gym a pool a spa retail spaces and offices. These leaves will generate power for the rest of the hotel through a coating on their surface made using spray-on solar cells which allow any surface exposed to sunlight to generate renewable electricity.

The stem of the structure becomes the space in which the hotel rooms are located. At the top of the hotel is mounted a large fully integrated vertical axis wind turbine which would also generate large amounts of electricity for the hotel. Various natural cooling strategies will be incorporated into the design of the hotel including the installation of earth pipes buried deep in the desert below the hotel.

As the wind blows over the top of the center portion of the structure earth cooled air from below is pulled up through the hotel

I recently became the lucky owner of a pair of Simple shoes. Sadly because of all the snow here in the UK for the past couple of weeks Ive not been able to wear them out and had to stick to boots but I have been able to find out about the company that made them.
Simple was established in 1991. They wanted to be the antithesis of the over hyped over produced and wasteful shoe manufacturers out there. Recognising that the shoe industry was on the whole damaging to the planet they rejected the status quo and began with the Green Toe shoe collection made from natural fibres. Later they added recycled car and bike tyres and plastic bottles to their shoe-making materials as well as certified organic cotton hemp bamboo and eco-certified leathers and suede. The packaging is stripped right back to just shoe forms and boxes made from recycled post consumer card and biodegradable bags too.

Regenerating your life- start in your bedroom

Written by admin

Walking into your bedroom should make your heart rate slow down. It should be the place where you sigh deeply and your whole body relaxes. The bedroom is your nest. A singular space that both regenerates you on a cellular level every night as you sleep and provides the environment and impetus for physical intimacy. As the place where we love deeply procreate our next generation and regenerate ourselves our bedroom is deservedly the sanctuary for our sanity.
Dont let the world into your nest. Guard the sanctity of the space by keeping the world at bay at the door. I know there are many late night TV lovers who will argue the point here but I still say that a television in the bedroom is one voice too many especially if you are in a committed relationship that is fragmented by the busyness of life. Same goes for newspapers and news magazines. Watch and read in the living room the kitchen the bathroom if you must but leave the bedroom to the wonder of silence and soft voices. (OK I will give into a little night music sometimes but not a radio). The older I get the more convinced I am that life must provide a retreat or we wither on the vine. There are numerous sleep studies that back me up on this- screens and sleep are incompatible and of little help in jump starting an intimate life.
There are an abundance of resources on greening your home so if you are already in that groove then I apologize for preaching to the choir. But if you are just beginning to apply the benefits of sustainability to your living space there is no more satisfying place to start than your bedroom. Your bed is the place that you spend almost as many hours as any other place in your life. If you are up for a new one look for all those cool natural materials that dont off-gas like wool organic cotton or natural latex. Its pricey but youre worth it. Also if you are going to spring for any luxury in life make it cotton sheets- organic preferably but truly the difference over time of beloved cotton sheets compared with the poly-cotton versions are dream worlds apart. (Check out the options at www.ecobedroom.com)
Without beating a dead drum it is worth repeating what most of us already know: We are one of the most exhausted cultures of all time; so much for all the leisure time that our new information age/economy was going to provide. Celebrate the gift of rest and how incredible it feels to wake up refreshed. The world really does look different through fresh eyes although admittedly this is a practice that I wish I was better at.
For many of us it is challenging to feed our need for intimacy and physical contact with the same energy that we bring to the selection and preparation of our food shopping and cooking habits. Giving your time to composting and recycling is no different than finding the space to air out your feelings. Making commitments to simplify your life and reducing impact on the environment requires the same amount of mental energy as constructing the space and time for deep and meaningful interactions in your days.
The healing affects of intimacy and connection extend deeply into the physical act of lovemaking. Hundreds of major medical studies have shown that an active sex life leads to a longer life better heart health a healthier immune response reduction in chronic pain symptoms lower rates of depression and even protection against some cancers. Men who have regular sex (only twice per week) have half as many heart attacks as men who only have sex once per month. In fact a regular garden variety sex life has been shown to extend life by as much as ten years. People who enjoy a meaningful sex life are less anxious fearful and inhibited. Greening your love and your bedroom has the power to extend out to the world in ways that we can barely imagine. Its a worthy practice that can only make life more sustainable.

Planning a hand-made eco wedding

Written by admin

As mine and Jezs big day approaches and most of the preparations in place I thought I would steal a little time to reflect and share my experience in planning our eco and ethical wedding.
Right from the start we wanted our wedding to reflect our everyday values and beliefs how we live and work. Although we didnt tell anyone until the summer our plans started last spring looking for all of the main wedding necessities a place to have the ceremony a place to celebrate and someone to provide food.
Ceremonies & Celebrations
Finding a place to have the ceremony was easy neither of us wanted to get married in church and the cost of using a hotel or other licenced venue ruled that out immediately. So register office it was to be. We didnt choose the one in Nottingham city as it isnt very pretty and would be further for our families to travel so we chose one in a nearby town which has a walled garden and is just as easy to get to via public transport.
Party Venue
Looking for a place to celebrate and a caterer went hand in hand because of course the venue needed the facilities to prepare and serve food and the caterer had to be happy working in the chosen venue. It took me a little while to catch on to the idea of having a celebration in a village hall I dont know why but I think I originally got the idea from an Ethical Weddings blog post. I had spend days and days scouring the internet for a suitable place in Nottinghamshire again hotels were just too expensive and many places wanted to provide their own food but I was determined to find an ethical caterer of our own.
Ethical Caterer
Luckily after the great realisation that a village hall would be just right for us I narrowed it down to two possibilities visited them both and chose one immediately a charity run hall not far from the register office. In-between times I was glued to my computer searching for a suitable caterer and in Nottinghamshire that isnt easy. I think in total I found 3 caterers that could provide local organic and fair trade food but when I called Cate from C8TER I need look no further. Right from the start Cate reassured me with her friendly professional and flexible approach and her attention to detail. Shes knowledgable about sourcing local and organic food and after sampling her cooking Im really looking forward to the meal on the day!
Dressing Up
Luckily finding a dress happened quite quickly although I expected it to be difficult. In fact initially I didnt see myself with a traditional wedding dress and thought I would buy a pretty organic cotton dress or something similar. However wedding fever soon took over and I got carried away with the idea of having a bridal gown. At this point I cant say too much as Jez hasnt seen the dress and I dont want to give anything away.
Oxfam Bridal
Once I knew I was going to get a wedding dress I also knew where I wanted to buy it Oxfam Bridal. So last July my mum and I excitedly set off to Leicester where the nearest Oxfam Bridal store is. Unfortuntaly I didnt find the dress for me on that first trip but I was heartened and encouraged by how nicely they had set up that separate part of the shop and the variety of gowns. The next nearest Oxfam Bridal shop is in Bradford and that shopping trip was the ultimate in making the most of public transport All tied in with a business meeting and a visit to see some friends I managed to get from Bradford train station to the Oxfam store pick a dress try it on buy it and get back on the train all in about 30 minutes! I was so pleased that Id found something that was just right and was really impressed with the choice and facilities in the Oxfam shop. The staff there were excited and fussy which made it even more special.
I realise that for some people the thought of buying their bridal gown from a charity shop sounds terrible but its probably the single item that Im most pleased with and Im so happy that I did manage to find it at Oxfam.
Bouquets and Posies
I had a mixed experience trying to find a suitable florist for my bouquet. Initially I was going plant some tulip bulbs in the garden ask our families to do the same and make my own bunch of flowers nearer to the time. Then I came to my senses and realised I know absolutely nothing about keeping or arranging flowers once theyve been plucked from the ground and decided to seek professional advice.
I spoke to a few different florists some of whom were sympathetic to the idea of having a green and ethical wedding and others who just looked baffled when I asked about locally sourced flowers. Im not picky I think all flowers are beautiful and so I wasnt going to dictate exactly the type of flower I wanted as long as it was grown as nearby as possible and were roughly in the colours I wanted. I chose a florist called The Rose Bower in the end because they were the most helpful and were willing to find out what seasonal locally grown flowers would be available at this time of year before Id even decided to use them. I cant wait to see mine and Beths (my bridesmaid niece & guest GGG editor) tulip bouquets when I go to collect them on the morning and they will have only travelled from the next county Lincolnshire.
Invitations & Decorations
After organising the food and venues the rest of the planning was quite easy. I love making things and wanted something individual so I decided from the start that I would make the invitations menus favours name places and decorations myself.
Bunting!
The village hall is quite typical in that it really needs a lick of paint and looks quite grubby in daylight but I like a challenge and so last September Jez his mum my parents and I went off armed with notepads and tape measures to figure out how we could transform it into a beautiful place to celebrate. From then on I spent months finding large pieces of fabric and sheets to drape around the room some from charity shops and some from ebay. I also bought some pink yellow green and white cotton to make my own bunting. I have metres and metres of the stuff and my friends at our craft group Stitched Up found it quite amusing that this cotton bunting never seemed to end!
I love bunting it always seems to cheer me up. Ive even had a small piece hanging up in the house for a few weeks.
RSVP
Because the venue is near to a maypole (which I used to run around and around when I was little) weve ended up with a maypole theme and the spring colours lemon pink and green. So I was very lucky when I asked my graphic designer friend if she could design me a motif for invites menus etc using that theme. What she came up with was beautiful and I just what I wanted. I bought all of the recycled card paper and envelopes I needed from Eco Craft who delivered it very quickly.

We asked our guests to RSVP via a website wed built. The website also provides details of transport directions local hotels and so on to save from using up any more paper than necessary.
Tables Favours & Name Cards
Aside from card for invites and menus I bought some lovely recycled paper which has confetti embedded in it. From this I made little origami boxes (which I talked about in my Origami Genius! post) and will put in each of them a bulb from my Dads garden these are our guests favours.
The name places are hand made natural fruit lollipops with no artificial colours or flavours from sweetstall.com and I have added little labels to each one for our guests with a little picture. Jez and I have a house rabbit so our labels have loved-up bunnies on them ahhhh. The others have butterflies hearts and flowers.
Also to decorate the tables we painted some plant pots white and decorated them with our colours and theme and soon I will be planting in them primroses or another spring flower which have been grown by a gardener just a few miles down the road.
The day before the wedding myself Jez and an army of sisters and nieces and my mum and dad will spend the day putting all of these decorations together hopefully creating a lovely room for eating drinking and dancing.
Cake Wine & Water
One of the nicest things about planning a wedding is that people really want to help and be involved. Jezs mum is brilliant at making and decorating cakes and there was no question that she would be making ours. We decided to go for a traditional fruit cake (with organic ingredients) as well as Fairtrade chocolate cupcakes. Jezs mum and I spent a lovely weekend making all of the little white sugar flowers for the main cake and hearts and butterflies for the cupcakes.
Guests will will take home slices of cake in pretty white recycled card boxes from The Tiny Box Company. Rachel at The Tiny Box Company was so obliging helping me to choose the right size box and keep within my budget This was the very last thing I bought and so I didnt want to spend too much. It was a very speedy delivery too so I didnt need to worry about any last minute hitches.
The bubbly and wine is all organic and Fairtrade and one of the types we have chosen is an English wine from Pennard Organic Vineyard.
Im also extremely happy that we even managed to find eco friendly bottled water thanks to our Green Guy Gareths post Bottled Water: Environmental Disaster? . In that article Gareth mentions Belu Water a carbon neutral company whose profits go towards clean water projects. So I contacted Belu who very helpfully found me a local supplier Lee & Fletcher who delivered the water to my door in just a couple of days!
I Do!
The rings are the last thing Im going to talk about although Im sure I must have forgotten something. Ill probably give an update afterwards anyway so I can show pictures of the decorated venue and my dress which wont be a secret by then.
Looking for rings was quite a strange experience. We wanted to get antique or second hand rings because that is the greenest option available I always work on that principle and used it throughout the wedding planning. I guess we were a little niaive thinking that wed be able to pop into one of the many antique shops in Nottinghamshire pick up two gold wedding bands and be on our way. Apparently this isnt the case.
After going into a few shops looking at every other type of antique ring but finding no wedding rings one lady told me that they just dont sell them because people are too superstitious to buy them. She said that if a wedding band was brought to the shop it just got sent for scrap! What a waste! I was so disappointed. However the internet is a fantastic thing and after a quick search I not only found John Clive Jewellers but two perfect second hand rings in exactly the right size!
When I look back Im proud of what weve achieved. Not everything is 100% green were having a fancy car to take us to the register office and a disco in the evening but all-in-all I think weve done really well.
Ill be in touch again at the end of April to let you know how it all went!

A hand-made eco wedding update

Written by admin

Well Jez and I are now back from honeymoon and back to reality and our wedding day although only two weeks ago now seems like a distant happy memory. Wow it flew by so past but thats probably because we had such a fantastic time!
This post is just going to be brief but after so many good luck wishes from everyone I wanted to give a quick update on how it all went. My original post Planning a hand-made eco wedding gives more details about what went into preparing our big day.
I suppose one of the things about planning an ethical wedding is that many people are curious about what it will be like. I think quite a few of our guests were really expecting something unusual but in fact it was traditional in many ways.
It was great for us that people entered into the spirit of the day so happily some of our older guests said they enjoyed it because it reminded them of the simple family weddings they used to go to when they were children. One of our friends even recycled part of our invitation to put into her wedding card.

The maypole cake and chocolate cupcakes looked beautiful and went down a treat. Everyone loved the food and organic wine and nothing went to waste!
On the morning of the wedding we picked up the flowers and took the hall keys to the caterer. Our caterer was excited that shed bought so much local food from the market that morning and the florist made a point of writing down where the flowers had been sourced

Living in Gravity

Written by admin

I was in our local hospital emergency room the other night. I was comforting my 10 year old daughter awaiting a surgical repair to her broken and dislocated arm. All the rooms were full with some degree of trauma and pain. This is not exceptional emergency room visits occur over 114 million times a year in the United States alone. We live in a world with gravity as my ten year old experienced with her recent bad landing on an unfortunate trampoline bounce. At some time or another we all miss and fall and the force of gravity bears on us all equally where we hit the ground- but were not running.
The other gravity of life takes hold at these moments that often usher in serious injury and grave tragedy. We are never prepared for the end of anything even if we are fully aware of the statistics and uncertainty that qualify life. How could we go about the fullness of lifes activities and challenges expecting tragedy to fall with the even handedness that the universal law of gravity metes out? In order to keep it all going we move forward with the naïve expectation that the difficult and challenging experiences in life only happen to other people not to us. Sooner or later even the luckiest among us joins the ranks of surviving.
I had just started reading I Will Not Be Broken by Jerry White the day before I spent the night in the emergency room. I have suffered illnesses and diseases with my children before some that seemed like they would define life forever. I remembered his words about how when people suffer a major loss of any kind they all carry a date. This is the moment when tragedy loss and surviving transformed their lives. As I sat in the ICU waiting room hearing hushed conversations around me I knew that some of that date setting was going on right there. I felt so grateful that all I had in front of me in the middle of the night is getting a girl through summer without the pool.
That is another phenomenon of tragedy that happens for most of us. We often end up comparing our loss to those of others we know or have heard of. Even in the most dire of circumstances survivors find gratitude their problem is manageable compared to people they know. Jerry White himself was the victim of life changing loss when early in his twenties he lost his lower leg in a minefield outside of Jerusalem. His book is an account of the years he has spent founding the Survivors Corp and he shares the gravity and grief of daily life on planet earth along with remarkable stories of resiliency.
Tragedy and loss is not limited to bodily events the emotional wreckage that can result from dysfunctional relationships is no less an issue of survivorship than losing a limb as I was recently reminded from one of my readers. She asked me to write of the loss and trauma of reinventing a life after being left and abandoned in her long term relationship. I hear these kinds of stories everyday where the heart can become so bruised that we become unable to feel unable to risk expressing love isolated with our fears and loneliness. Finding the courage and the heart to rebuild a life that has meaning and brings joy requires the same skills of survivorship which begin by giving up being a victim and choosing life.
The universal law of gravity is based on the fundamental force of attraction between bodies (objects of mass) which is what gravity in life should teach us. We are all in this together and reacting to the losses that we sustain with the ability to reach out and give back is the basis on which we not only survive but thrive. Often it is not until the world seems to be coming apart that we begin to feel both compassion and connectedness to people both that we know and that are strangers who have experienced a loss like ours.
Early stages of recovery from tragedy happen as we lose our sense of being a victim and realize that we belong. Joining groups of people who share similar experiences is a profoundly healthy response to finding meaning in your own experience. Settling into a new and different life experience is heightened and more rewarding when we risk offering our help to others just beginning their journey.
Experiencing our brokenness is where we get a heart that is cracked wide open. A heart that has the both the strength to grieve the courage to forgive the tenacity to live in gravity.

What Happened When I Broke My #1 Green Parenting Rule

Written by admin

Being a parent and trying to live ethically can mean youre constantly stumbling across new dilemmas.
Whether youre checking ingredients in the shops making decisions over Christmas presents or deciding how to wash your laundry the choices seem endless.
And the thing with wanting to be as green as we can is that those of us with a hidden (or not-so-secret) perfectionist streak can end up beating ourselves up over every little detail
So to be able to keep functioning and to save lots of time we often find its best to make a decision and stick with it. That way when well-meaning opinion-sharers do their evangelist bit you can remain steady and calm without feeling the need to argue your position or take on the guilt theyre unconsciously trying to offer you!

Tower of Droplets creates algae for biofuel and biomass

Written by admin

http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2010/11/29/tower-of-droplets-by-crab_1_Idnpf_69.jpg

Eco Factor: Sustainable tower utilizes algae to produce renewable fuel.
Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham of London Studio CRAB have been awarded the $65000 second prize in the International Competition for Taiwan Tower at Taichung. The architect team has proposed a sustainable tower that can create algae for biofuel and biomass. Christened the Tower of Droplets the structure is inspired by the creation of energy.

Much of the tower is open to public to view the processes at close quarters. A variety of different arrangements of plantations and localized environment have been distributed throughout the length of the tower. When watered and filtered the algae create biomass which can be used as food for fish and plants. Moreover algae also produces biofuel and a removes a considerable amount of CO2 from the air.

The designers estimate that with 10888sqm of algae surface the tower will produce about 3266400 liters of oil and produces several thousand tons of biomass in a year. The algae surface can be doubled to double the production of biofuel and biomass. The structure also offers three observation levels at different levels three office zones which will be occupied by the City Development Authority and a five-story museum at the base of the tower.

Pama Design unveils Altair 70 solar-powered concept yacht

Written by admin

http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2010/11/29/altair-70-by-pama-design_1_RV9qW_69.jpg

Eco Factor: Concept yacht propelled by electricity.
Designers over at Pama Architetti Design have conceptualized a solar-powered yacht that has been made from fiberglass and includes enough photovoltaic panels to generate about 5KW of renewable electric power. Dubbed the Altair 70 the 70-foot yacht has been based on the desire to combine an aesthetically competitive form with the use of photovoltaic modules.

To include a large array of photovoltaic panels onboard the designers have thought of include two large wings to increase the surface area thus increasing the amount of energy generated. The wings can be closed when the yacht is sailing. When moored the wings can be opened and the photovoltaic panels in the bow can also be raised to recharge the onboard batteries.

When the yacht is moored the forewings can be raised to allow two comfortable reserved and shaded areas to be fitted with tables and sofas. The lower deck has a modular scheme which can be subdivided into three blocks. Each module has two versions which can be furnished in a variety of ways.

HOK conceptualizes net zero emission office building for St. Louis

Written by admin

http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2010/11/29/net-zero-co2urt-by-hok_2_xN8U8_69.jpg

Eco Factor: Sustainable building generates renewable solar energy.
HOK and the Weidt Group have come up with a concept office building that has been designed to Net Zero Emission Building standards of the US Department of Energy. The office called the Net Zero Co2urt has been conceptualized to be built in midtown St. Louis which was chosen specifically for its four-season climate. The building which has to adapt its energy requirements to ever-changing environmental conditions will consume 76 percent less energy than comparable office buildings.

Optimizing the use of daylight reduces energy demand for artificial lighting. The shape and orientation of the building have also been designed to take some load off the heating and ventilation system. The designers have also put the floors of the building to work as they carry a radiant heating system and an under-floor air distribution system.

The building also includes 51800 square feet of solar panels that have been incorporated in the walls and the rooftop. The roof of the southern wing will be carrying 5000 square feet of solar thermal tubes which collectively leave the building an annual energy cost of $2418 or 1 cent per square foot.

Fairtrade in the Borough of Gedling

Written by admin

I was attending a meeting in the Gedling Borough Council building today and something caught my eye which made me vary happy indeed. In the reception was a stall promoting Fairtrade and announcing that the Borough of Gedling is aiming for Fairtrade town status. This means that after the City of Nottingham it will be the first borough in the county to gain Fairtrade status.
To demonstrate their committment to this the council have set out 5 main goals:
The council has already passed a Fairtrade resolution.
Fairtrade goods must be sold in local shops and Fairtrade products served in local cafes and restaurants.
Fairtrade products must be used by a number if local workplaces and community organisations
Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign
Set up a Fairtrade steering group of councillors campaigners and representatives from locals schools churches and businesses.
If you are a resident of Gedling Borough and would like to be involved or express your support then dont delay! Either visit the Arnold Civic Centre and fill in an expression of interest form or telephone Allan Leadbeater on 0115 961 1316 or Phil Barlow on 0115 952 6488.
This is such great news and a massive step forward for Gedling! I love the idea of being able to walk to a local cafe and sit down with a lovely hot fair trade coffee rather than this being an unusual treat you can only find in the city centre. All credit to our local borough council for taking the lead you have GGGs support and good wishes!
Visit the Gedling Borough council website to find out more about their aims for Fairtrade town status.

Wind-powered library will cast Winds of Change to your reading habits

Written by admin

http://www.instablogsimages.com/images/2010/11/30/winds-of-change-library-by-michael-jantzen_1_ypFJn_69.jpg

Eco Factor: Eco-friendly library proposal powered by renewable wind energy.
Eco-conscious architect and designer Michael Jantzen has conceptualized a sustainable library that will be powered entirely by renewable wind energy. Christened the Winds of Change Library the proposal seeks the development of a multi-level structure that will incorporate a large garden with trees plants and grass covering the entire two-level roof. The roof garden would help to keep the library cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It would also function as a safe and comfortable place for the visitors to read outdoors. The roof garden is also designed to capture and store rainwater for use in and around the library.

The majority of the Winds of Change Library would be made from a single repeated structural element fabricated from various earth-friendly concrete composite materials. The shape of these structural elements is derived from the profile of the five vertical axis wind turbines (made of lightweight metal) which are custom designed and integrated into the top of the library. In this way five pieces of the structure appear to be rotating when the wind blows instead of five stuck on conventional wind turbines. These wind turbines would be designed to power the entire structure.

In addition emphasis has been placed on the most appropriate window placement in order to provide the maximum benefits from natural lighting and ventilation. Many solar light tubes are mounted into the roof so that natural sun light can be channeled into every part of the interior not illuminated by the windows. The design of the Winds of Change Library explores ways in which to fully integrate alternative energy gathering and storage systems into the structure so that these systems can become a major part of the creation of an unexpected and exciting architectural aesthetic. Due to the modular components that form the majority of the structure it would be easy to logically grow the size and shape of the library in time to accommodate changing needs.
